This story is somewhat of a memoir, but with all the details so perfectly portrayed that you almost feel as if you were present in this family, I especially liked the part about milking cows....I had always wondered about the technique. Harol Marshall is a writer of great diversity. Having read everything she has ever written, I must admit, this is my favorite! What a delightful read. If you grew up in small town America in the 40's and 50's or have a relative who did, this is a must read. The family interactions will have you laughing until the tears roll. What a spunky little girl with very definite ideas.
Mystery and thriller writer, Harol Marshall has a winner in her new book, GROWING UP WITH PIGS. This short book will not only bring smiles to your face, it will tug at your heart. If you grew up in the fifties and/or sixties, you will have flashbacks to your own childhood memories and it makes you wish you could have been her best friend in school. Great reading.

I recently finished this heartwarming collection of short stories of one girl growing up with in a household with four brothers, a demure English mother and her Upstate New York, police chief father...what adventures they had. Wish I could have been part of them. Marshall is a born storyteller! I laughed out loud constantly as I turned the pages. Loved the title. Definitely a five star read.
This book is a departure from Harol Marshall's thrillers and mysteries. As much as I love those, this one is my favorite because it's pure Americana. Through lovely descriptive prose, the stories of her family and friends in a small northern town come alive. This is a book full of real "characters" and it makes the tales even more entertaining. My favorite is the one where the parents go out for the night, leaving the kids at home. It's innocent enough, but I laughed out loud the entire way through the story. If you grew up in the 50s or enjoy the nostalgic aspects of that era, pick up this book. You will enjoy it!
I received Harol Marshall's latest book "Growing Up With Pigs" as a gift from a very good friend. It was one of the best gifts she oould have given me. She knows I love to read and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was so humorous and Harol has a way of expressing herself that makes the story fun to read. Her dad was the local police chief and her mother was British. I found the interaction between Harol and her father especially hilarious. I would have loved to have been her best friend and joined in some of that fun. The book was a breath of fresh air and is a good one to read when you want to escape your own problems and laugh at the antics of someone else.

This book is simple and inviting. Simple in a good way. It is delightful and refreshing to read a book about a normal family without murder, sex and abuse at it's core. Well written, funny and heartwarming
